Laboratories of Study and Teaching

The PPGCC shares four laboratories with the Faculty of Computing and its two undergraduate courses: Bachelor of Science in Computer Science (BCC) and Bachelor of Information Systems (BSI). Three of these laboratories are in the building of the Institute of Exact and Natural Sciences (ICEN) and one of them is located in another area called BLOCK M, set of classrooms and laboratory. One of the laboratories is always free to access of the students and another three are allocated primarily for activities with the presence of professors (classes and demonstrations).

It should be noted that the BCC and BSI courses occur respectively in the afternoon and evening, so the three laboratories have exclusive use of the PPGCC in the morning, since no undergraduate classes are taught.

The configurations of the four laboratories are approximately:

  • Good lighting;
  • 20 work stations distributed on benches;
  • Physical points for Internet access;
  • White board;
  • Multimedia projector;
  • Climatized environment;
  • Wireless access network.

The settings of the study places are approximately:

  • Processors: Pentium Core 2 Duo;
  • RAM memory: 4 Gbytes;
  • Dedicated video card: 256Mbytes;
  • HD: 300 Gbytes to 500 Gbytes;
  • Monitor: 17;
  • Windows / Linux platform.

All the study places have software tools necessary to support undergraduate and graduate courses. There are two support rooms attached to two of these laboratories, on different floors, that interconnect the vertical backbone of the ICEN building, and provide the horizontal backbone of the building. It is in these spaces that the racks, the area of maintenance of the computers, and servers of specific applications are, requested by professors. Two wireless networks are available for the entire UFPA Belém campus, which allows easy access to the internet for professors, students and visitors.

Name:

Laboratory of Applied Electromagnetism (LEA)

Description:

This Laboratory aims to carry out teaching and research activities in undergraduate and graduate studies, develop projects and provide services in the areas related to telecommunications applications, and has the cooperation of several national and international partners, such as the Swedish company ERICSSON. The LEA has 13 undergraduate students, nine Master's degree students and six Doctorate students. The LEA's infrastructure is maintained through projects and agreements and service delivery. It is an area of 100 m2, where are distributed microcomputers with Internet access and benches for the development of prototypes. The LEA has complete benches for measurements in Radio Frequency (RF), network analyzer, spectrum analyzer, frequency meter, power meters, field strength meter, function generators, oscilloscopes and various digital multimeters up to 20 GHz frequencies.

With resources in partnership with ERICSSON, an excellent infrastructure for measurement and simulation in copper networks (network analyzer and impedance analyzer), line simulators (ETSI and ANSI standard), noise injection, an Ericsson DSLAM center of 40 Km in copper network, in the different configurations, which allows to characterize and model copper networks, besides to develop and evaluate performance of applications on hybrid networks including copper network. The LEA also has a bench to test optical network networks and access network: 40 km optical cables, optical analyzer, OTDR, splice machine, opticalpower meter, optics bench, optoelectronic devices. Related to computing, there are simulators for optical networks (VPI, OPsystems) and optical and high frequency devices, such as CONSOL, FEKO and CST. Research in broadband networks involves applications over twisted-pair (copper) networks, a technology that has been followed and developed in the group since 2002 with the ADSL system, which allowed access to up to 5Km and rates ranging from a few MHz to the new G.FAST standard, which will allow access of the order of Gbps to a range of the order of 200 meters.

This UFPA research group participates in the ITU-T broadband forum and the SG15 group discussion forum. Innovative research for the use of wired and hybrid fiber-to-fiber and fiber-radio networks as a solution for wireless network integration are involved in partnership with KTH and IT-Aveiro and are included in European projects. The modeling seeks to optimize these networks, considering economic aspects and energy saving. In another research, the development of interfaces for digital fiber radio systems (DRoF) is sought. Studies of interference in LTE systems operating in the TV range and coexistence of cognitive radio networks are also subjects inserted in the state of the art. Optical network supervision is also highlighted in partnership with KTH and Ericsson, in which preliminary results (master's thesis) are promising, citing that one of them is under evaluation for submission of a patent application.

Thematic Laboratories

PPGCC professors also coordinate thematic research laboratories that are divided between the ICEN building, the building recently delivered by UFPA to support Graduate Programs (built with resources from the CT-INFRA program) and the Electrical Engineering and Computing (linked to the Institute of Technology). All thematic laboratories are certified as a research group by CNPq. In general, each of the laboratories has at least a dozen workstations and other resources (printers, scanner, routers, etc.), mostly funded by research projects funded by development agencies or private initiative. In these laboratories co-exist masters, fellows of scientific initiation and, in some cases, doctoral students.

Building Solutions to Support the Decision-Making Process in Multidisciplinary and Uncertainty Environments, Using Soft Computing Techniques

Description:

This research group conducts studies and application of soft computing techniques in the construction of solutions to support the decision-making process in diverse environments of uncertainty, as an alternative to the search for solutions to problems of high complexity in these environments. The group gave more visibility to the participating team, at local, national and international level, where the interest and participation of important institutions such as ELETRONORTE, EMBRAPA, UFRA, UNIRIO and PUC-RJ were obtained, as well as the formalization of agreements to promote international and inter-university scientific and technical cooperation through the exchange of research professors, students and technical personnel, and the execution of projects of common interest. The results, in addition to the publications that have been made available, have opened a range of opportunities to enrich the Master's work of the PPGCC and PPGME students, especially with the recent signing of the research partnership with ELETRONORTE. The results have enabled the writing of articles and chapters of international books on the practical use of soft computing techniques. The work is developed from the following Research Lines: Automation System for Management of Testing and Calibration Laboratories; Metrology and Chemometrics; Use of Hybrid Systems: development of new methodologies for analysis of the productive chain of Agroforestry Systems (SAFs).
